We had a pair of tickets to watch the Homecoming football match between Purdue and Northwestern University. So we went with 58,000 other people to the Ross Ade stadium for our very first American football match.
Ok, I know very little about the sport, so I am in no position to criticize the game. But I watch soccer, and if I have to choose to watch soccer or American football, soccer wins hands down anytime.
The way American football is played is very segmented. Usually there is exciting action for say 5 seconds, and then play is stopped, and we have to wait for the game to start again. It is like watching a DVD and then having someone press the pause button every 5 seconds. Very irritating.
Oh, but there are lots of "side shows" to keep us entertained when game play is stopped. The marching band is on standby to play whenever the whistle is blown, which prompts the spectators to cheer. Then, there will be programs on the Big Screen to keep you entertained, like trivia questions, vote for the best photo, vote for the biggest fan, yada yada... And there will be ridiculously funny things happening on the field, like mascots fighting, mascots chasing a fan in a gorilla suit (I am not making this up, I swear. The gorilla got caught and was escorted off the field by the police) And if all these are not your fancy, there is always eye-candy in the form of the cheerleaders for you to see. (Actually, it was pretty fun to see them in action)
There is also the halftime show, when the marching band performs:
Anyhow, after two and a half hours of morse-code-like-action, the game finally ended. Purdue won, 35 to 17.
Oh, but Shisheng enjoyed the game though... strange man...
