Homecoming!

Yesterday was Homecoming for Purdue. This is a day for the Purdue alumni to come back to their alma mater...

One of the famous alumnus of Purdue is actually Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. He came back to attend the opening ceremony for a building named after him: The Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering.

We wanted to listen to Neil Armstrong give his speech. The area for the opening ceremony was sealed off, but there was a live telecast a few buildings away. So we went over to watch on the big screen.

There was already a guy talking on the big screen. But we couldn't tell if he was Neil Armstrong. He was a bit difficult to recognise out of his spacesuit. Plus, the sound system was not that great. We could barely hear the words.

Later, a few other men took to the podium and gave their speeches. At the end of four speeches, we still didn't manage to figure out which man is Neil Armstrong.

We finally found a photo of him on the Purdue website. This is how he looks like now:

Ah, mystery solved...

The alumni marching band members also came back to perform! There was a parade, and it was a feast to see them march and play.

We were really impressed by the number of people who came back to play for the band. And they were still very good! And they are not just recent graduates; a lot of them were middle-aged men with beer bellies, and we saw a few grey haired grandmothers too!

We later found out that the oldest person who came back to perform was 92 years old. Wow!

And this is the "World's Largest Drum", or so it claims to be...

And this, was quite a treat to see! Heh heh... The ladies in gold are the alumni members of the baton, er, twirlers (er, I don't know what to call them, but you know, they are the ones who perform wonderful tricks with their batons: twirl, throw, catch) But they remind me more of something else... like wonder woman brigade maybe... don't mess with them guys!

(Oh it was reeeally cold that morning, so hats off to them for wearing so little, and still being able to finish the whole parade.)
