My first pots!

Ta-dah!! My first pots!

This one is my very first wheel-thrown pot... that explains the irregular walls... the glazes used were Whip White for the outside, and Auburn for the inside. I practised carving by scratching some claw marks of a bird walking across my pot... (you can see it if you look really hard...)

My glazing skills are far from perfect, as can be seen from the big dark-brown blotch at the back of the pot... It was a poor attempt to cover up a spot that I missed while glazing the inside of the pot...

But I like the rim though, where the Whip White and Auburn merged... :)

And here is my second pot!

Ok, got a bit of improvement here, coz the walls are straighter than the first pot... but it is chunkier and heavier due to the thicker walls. That is because I didn't manage to pull the walls up while throwing. Hence the short pot here...

Once again, this is glazed in Whip White. The red and orange are actually not glazes, but "velvets". These are coloured clay which can be painted onto the pots.

And you can see the speckles on the pot ya? That is because I used brown clay, instead of white clay. Brown clay contains specks which will show up after firing. I like them coz they give the pot a bit of an earthy feel...

(White clay is a bit more, erm, difficult to work with. Hence I am still sticking to brown for now... But the colour of the glazes tend to show up better on white clay. So I can't wait to start on the white!)

We were advised to stick to three different glazes for one whole year, just to learn the different characteristics of the glazes. So, the three that I picked are:

1. Whip white
2. Auburn
3. Moody Blue

There are others, like Jade Green, Periwinkle, Pansy Purple etc... and I will love to try them all! But I guess I better make sure I become good friends with my first three glazes, before I venture out to try the rest...

Hmm, now I don't know what to do with these pots...

the color names sound very interesting already.

Yeah, they are! And my pottery teachers who made the glazes actually name some of the colours after themselves... :)
