Potter Chatter

I am proud to announce that I have finally finished reading all seven Harry Potter books! Muahahaha... (Yes, I know half the world has already finished reading it, but I still want to make this proclamation anyway... so there...)

Anyway, back to serious potter business:

I carved this pattern onto my bottle using a tool which I just bought (only $3!). It works like a dream! I think I will do more carving from now on. Quite fun.

After carving, I painted over the carved areas with a velvet (which is something like coloured clay), and then wiped off the excess which a wet sponge. The velvet will remain only in the carved areas. This colour is called Amethyst, which happens to be my birthstone too!

I still have to glaze it. From my previous experience with velvets, I have to make sure the glaze that I apply will not obscure the colour of the velvet. Gail suggested I use Jade, which is a nice green glaze. On top of the velvet, the Amethyst will turn a little bluish, so it can still show up against the Jade. So Jade it shall be!

This bowl is glazed in Nutmeg, just one layer. I want to see how the glaze will behave when it meets the faceted edges of the bowl. If the glaze "breaks" at the edges, the pattern will show up more prominently.

My heart-shaped bowl is glazed in Periwinkle. Two layers. I got a little worried when I applied the second layer, bacuase there was some visible pitting on the glaze. I used my finger to try and smoothen up the surface. It looks okay now, but I don't know how it is going to react when it goes into the kiln. Keeping fingers crossed now.

Here are the two plates I made last week. As you can see, there is a HOLE in one of the plates! *sobz* The plate was not centered properly when I started trimming it, and all attempts to salvage the situation made it worse. And I ended up with a HOLE! Lesson learnt: Do everything properly from step #1 to save myself the nightmare.

Fortunately, the second plate was trimmed nicely. (Actually, it looked a bit lopsided when I turned it right side up, but I was so xianz after trimming that I pretended it was because the table was slanted.) Off to the bisque kiln it goes, before I do anymore harm to it.
