We left on Thursday evening. It was supposed to be a 2.5h drive, but everyone must have thought that the long weekend was a great opportunity to get away, so there was a very bad jam on the highways. In the end, we reached at nine plus, starving...
But it was all worth it! Two full days of the sun, the sand and the sea, plus yummy food for every meal!
The beach at St Joseph was rated the third best beach in the world. The sand was amazingly fine (not like the ones at East Coast Park, which are probably more suited for making cement)... the sea (or rather, lake, coz it is a beach by Lake Michigan) looked endless and uninterupted (no cargo ships in the background spouting smoke), and the sun just made everything look sparkling! The whole beach was peppered with people with beach umbrellas, foldable chairs, beach towels etc, just like what we see in magazines. I was beginning to understand the "beach culture" that people have over here.
We played soccer (my first try) at the beach on the first day. More fun than I thought, and it is an added bonus that the team that I was on won! (Although I still wonder if they gave me some leeway...) Also went to dip our feet in water. Some of the very brave guys actually went all the way into the lake, despite it being very cold. They survived.
The second evening, we had a BBQ by the beach! No satay or chicken wings, but we had pork patties, beef (not just any beef, but Certified Angus Beef Chuck) patties, even vegetarian patties! So this is how an American BBQ is like: burgers with different patties, with or without cheese. And hot dogs in hot dog buns, plus ketchup and mustard. And of course, S'mores! These are sweet treats which are made by sandwiching a piece of melted chocolate between two crackers, and then coating the sides of the crackers with melted marshmallows. Very very sinful, but oh-so-good...
We also went to Whirlpool HQs for a tour. (Two of our friends are having their attachments there, so we had an exclusive tour of the place!) Very interesting, with lots of dismantled microwaves, washing machines, stoves etc around. I am particularly interested in this cupboard made of plastic with a zipper door. Just hang your clothes inside, zip it up, turn it on, and steam will be generated to iron your clothes! And you don't even have to be there! The mixers also caught my eye. Love the pink one... :P
Nights were spent with eight people all huddled in one hotel room watching DVDs. We watched two romantic comedies: Definitely, Maybe and PS: I Love You. Pretty entertaining, but not as entertaining as the YouTube videos which ZR shared with us! This is one of the "Awesome Videos".
Those guys really got the moves! Super hilarious. Don't watch it if you have to stifle your laughter in the office, coz you will probably suffer from serious internal injuries. Don't say I did not warn you.
Four of us ordered the same thing: Perch Dinner, which is something like fish and chips... just goes to show how deprived Indiana is when it comes to seafood...
